Ever seen a house shaped like a llama? No, of course you haven’t.
Manuel designed and built his home 40 years ago (photo at bottom of page). He and his wife live upstairs, and the lower floor is dedicated to his creative endeavours. Apart from a small walkway, every available space on both the floor and walls showcase his work: pottery of all shapes and sizes, each individually hand-painted. Upon first walking into his home, you are initially taken aback by the sheer scale of it. There are THOUSANDS and they are all unique. Then you notice him, to the right, tucked away in his artist’s nook working on yet another piece. You will also notice the giant cobwebs, one directly behind him, which he said are very effective for repelling mosquitos.
What really took me aback was the dedication of this man. He has modelled his entire life around his passion. I left his home with tears in my eyes, but, then again, I am a right softie.
If you go to Cafayate in Salta, Argentina, head to the Museo de la Vid y el Vino and you will find this beautiful building opposite. There are no signs or plaques outside. However, if the door is open, you are welcome to enter.
